Lab work

Lick Do you remember when I spent 8 million dollars to have my dog's DNA tested? Did they test to see if she had mule in her, do you think?

The dog trainer came last night. How do you think it went?

This trainer is highly recommended by my day care, and by several people. Not to mention, I have met the dog trainer's dogs, and you have never met such ridiculously obedient Stepford Wife dogs in your life. And yet, was she flummoxed by my dog? Did she say, "Your dog has really unusual responses"?

Could she mean, for example, the way my dog would just lie down like roadkill and absolutely refuse to learn anything no matter what we did? How she wouldn't even look at us, like she had no idea who we were and she wasn't related to us in the slightest?

You have to hand it to the trainer. I'd have started crying and gone home. She persevered, and eventually Tallulah gave up and learned all the things she was supposed to learn, and once she learns things, she really does them consistently.

The trainer said, "What you have on your hands, here, is a really smart dog who is also really stubborn and obstinate. She is too smart and scheming for her own good."

I do not know why this makes me a little proud of Tallulah, when I am not actually trying to WORK with Tallulah. But whenever anyone says, "Are you sure there's no Lab in that dog?"

Yes. I'm sure.

  1. I took my newly adopted pooch to the vet for a checkup. She is black and looks like a purebred lab. I asked the vet, just out of curiosity, do you think there is anything else but lab in her? The vet and the tech looked at each other, and the vet said, “That’s a pretty big head.” Which made me laugh, because, that’s your response? She’s lab and big head? Then they followed that up with, she’s part Rottweiller. Just goes to show you…something.

  2. He’s a rebel and he’ll never ever be any good
She’s a rebel and she’ll never ever be understood
And just because she doesn’t do what everybody else does
That’s no reason why I can’t give her all my love
She is always good to me, always treats me tenderly
‘Cause she’s not a rebel, no no no
She’s not a rebel, no no no, to me

  3. Dear Tee,
I really do not think that dog was abused before we got her. I mean, she was underFED, certainly, but they loved her, I can tell.
    She is just a dink.

  4. You can definitely see the pit bull in her in that picture! She looks very much like my Lincoln, although smaller and blonde, of course. Pit bulls are supposedly very smart and they’re also supposed to be very, very into pleasing their owners. Perhaps the stubborness is the Tibetan Spaniel coming through – maybe she’s too busy meditating or contemplating eternity to want to be bothered with learning new things?????

  5. Well, since I am a Johnny-come-lately and didn’t know that Tallulah had her DNA tested, I am most intrigued.
We had a puppy dumped on our front yard last year and hired us a dog trainer, too. We actually met her at a seminar of the Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan and so felt comfortable asking her to be our dog trainer. This puppy is now almost 2 years old and every single person who looks at him sees a different breed, except the vet who claims he is mostly Am. Staff. Terrier. He is also a big-headed dog and was the most clumsy, uncoordinated puppy you ever saw! So much so that I named him Ernest T. Bass, one the the most beloved uncoordinated characters on t.v.
Ernest T. Bass and I would love to know which genetic testing company you used and if you would recommend this company to someone like us? Our other dogs have “papers” to document their bloodline and I think he would like to feel included.
Oh, by the by, when our dog trainer person first came to the house she looked at our herd and said “you know you have 3 of the most stubborn and hard to train breeds known, right?”
So my next dog will be hand-picked from the easy-to-train breeds once I figure out what that might be!
I do think Lula is a very beautiful girl, stubborn and all!
