I don't have a lot to talk about today, now that I am an internationally famous movie-trailer star and now that you know I do not talk like Patty and Selma from The Simpsons. But I will talk about numbers.
Do most of you blog? As I have said before, I started blogging because Marvin kept nagging me to, and I totally didn't want to. Marvin had something like six blogs going and he'd get seven comments a year. Plus, I thought as soon as you posted something, someone would come along and write a mean comment. It just didn't sound like any fun.
But in 2007, when we went a year without spending, I blogged about it. I sent said blog to I think 18 friends and family members.
Last month, I had a little over 18,000 readers. This kind of seems like a lot, but it's nothing if you're Dooce or even The Nester. For a long time, my readership went up 1,000 every month, but this year it has held steady, hovering in the high teens.
Do you obsess about how many readers you get? What makes you keep coming back to a blog? Like, for me, I really don't think I'd be fond of Dooce if I knew her in real life, but there is something about her acerbic personality that makes me want to read her. Plus, her site looks great. Plus also, she is funny every time she writes.
I read another woman, My Topography, because she fascinates me with her sort of perfect life. And she talks about the flaws, too, but she just had a baby and recently photographed her post-baby body and it makes you want to weep. She looks better than I have in 15 years. She runs all the time, she cooks real food, she has baby chickens. I don't know. I sort of want to be her but I never will.
So, tell me. Do you look at your stats? Do you get depressed if they go down? Do you have a healthy attitude about it? Do you wish you had baby chickens?
