I worked at Marineland, in Palos Verdes off the coast of Los Angeles in 1976. I sold film and camera supplies out of a very cute and really heavy wheeled kiosky thing. Six days a week, I was at all of the “shows”. The trainers were all highly educated marine biologists, oceanographers and or marine veterinarians. The “preformers” are highly intelligent and after some time would recognize me, the man-thing.
Rubbing a baby walrus face, the roughest scrub brush whiskery face, as his mom slept near by with one eye open, hearing his happy grunty fart noises was the coolest thing you can ever imagine.
The killer whales, Orky and Corky were a breading pair. Corky had 3 or 4 pregnancies, live births, the babies survived maybe up to 6-9 months.
During one killer whale show, Orky was being quite frisky, Corky was lying down at the bottom of the 40 foot tank being very docile and submissive. It was the part of the show when a tourist/spectator would participate, climb a ladder over the center of the tank and Orky would leap up and grab a fish from this person. On that day Orky leaped up with the biggest whale boner you have ever seen. I had never seen one up to that point or ever again. It was big and pink. The look on the lady’s face, holding the fish 20 feet out over open water, I’m a kabob by jingo. They immediately stopped the show and let Orky smoke a ciggarette and calm down.

OK, I was trapped at O’Hare the other day during the “news” about the whale/trainer incident. I thought I’d have to stick a pin in my eye…. all that time wondering WHY a wild animal would act like a wild animal, and quoting the trainer’s Facebook friends and interviewing people on the street who wouldn’t know a killer whale from a shark. It was enough to make my ears bleed. But, here’s the kicker…. I thought I’d die when they announced (with a straight face mind you)that foul play was not suspected. What the heck?? Foul play???? Like someone took out a contract and promised the whale freedom in exchange for doing her in? Foul play? I’m still amazed that anyone would say such an obviously ridiculous thing…..
That’s all my input today…. and I still wouldn’t leave a baby with a Rottweiler…. or a with killer whale for that matter. Animals act on instinct sometimes no matter how hard we try to anthropomor…. you know, that word that means, make them seem like people. I can’t find the dictionary.
I have to go drink some decaf….

As for the whale, and the whole Sea World crew, I just don’t know enough to take sides.
I think and hope that the large, wild animals at Sea World were not brought there for the heck of it, but like someone above said, they were either born there or brought there because they were injured and could not be returned to the wild. I hope.
No one will know WHY the whale did what it did to the trainer, but suffice it to say that it’s line of thought probably does not take the same line as any human would. They cannot kill the whale, and if they release it, i would probably die, so I guess they are stuck with it. That being said, the trainers should learn from the incident and change the way they do things.
The whole zoo discussion, I will just leave it alone.

I have several friends in the racing industry and they are NOT included in this statement. They are still my friends even though I do not agree with the actual racing of their horses. But they are awesome individuals because they do find their ex-racers good homes.

Most of the sea life in captivity has been saved from fishing nets (or boat motor damage). The fisherman, when they accidentally trap the orcas, slit their stomachs and fill them with rocks so that they will go to the bottom. It keeps them from having to pay big fines for their salvage.
Who eats the fish?
It is not a black/white question.

Good points in both directions here…Just goes to show that there is not just one correct answer.
I do want to point out that I was a whale researcher for 20 years and seeing a whale or dolphin respond to a trainer in a big tank is NOT the same thing as experiencing a whale on a whale watch or something like that. It definitely might spark the interest of a child to learn more, that’s totally true. To me though, it’s a question of whether or not it’s right in the ethical sense; not a question of whether people can get something out of it.
Also, not all animals are equal. The complexity of the brain in animals such as whales, dolphins, elephants and gorillas, to me, makes it unfair to put them in captivity even for our edification as humans. It’s just not right in my opinion.
And the complexity of their societies is just about impossible to imitate in captive situations. Some of these animals languish from the trauma of being separated from their original family groups. It’s a terrible thing to do especially if you’ve ever seen a pod of dolphins in the wild. It’s unimaginable to take them from the open ocean and then put them in a comparably tiny pool. Kills me to see it!
Sorry. This stuff gets me really fired up. Ding ding ding and also dang!

We had a Sea World here in Northeast Ohio. It was open for approximately 25-30 years. And that was with a season from Memorial Day to maybe Halloween? Crazy, crazy stuff.
Horse racing breaks down the animal. Then when they are no longer profitable the owner that is less than compassionate sends his animal to auction for the highest kill buyer to put on a truck to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. Greyhounds can be killed before they are put through the torture of enduring the inhumane treatment of their equine comrades. Some are not so lucky.
Fortunately there are wonderful rescue groups working diligently to save domesticated animals. Just as there are groups to save sea and wild life from injury and extinction.

Someone mentioned learning about animals from TV … is everyone who is anti-captivity also opposed to training animals for TV/movies? (I’m not getting judgey here, just curious.) Lots of movies have animals who are trained to perform, and who, by all accounts, seem to enjoy it, and are treated very well.
I guess what I don’t like is the idea that we can train the animal out of them. If we keep them in habitats as close as possible to their natural ones, and let them BE animals, then I think it’s actually not a bad thing — like Hulk said, they get medical attention, guaranteed meals, etc, and that’s not a bad deal for them. What I have a problem with is when people keep them in teeny little cages where they just waste away miserably, or when we expect them to behave in a way other than what their nature is. (By which I dont mean training them — if they’re well-treated, I see nothing wrong with training them for movies, etc. — what I mean is when we place them in captivity and then expect that just because they’re in cages, they’ll be as docile as Henry and Tallulah, and we forget that they are actually tigers and bears who have natural instincts.)
It’s horrible that this woman was killed, obviously, but a) she knew the dangers when she took the job, and b) the whale was just being a wild animal, which is what he is, and I don’t think he should be blamed for that. I highly doubt his thought process was “Kill the human!!!”
I probably just made many enemies for saying that if it’s done right, I don’t think having animals in captivity is all bad, but those are my thoughts. Furry Godmother made some very good points.

What a pot you stirred, Juney and you knew you WOULD with the true animal folks here. You are a sly one, so you could sneak off to the library while people get all worked up good over here.
I live around the corner from that Sea World and I can tell you it is a very sad thing for all of us here in the Sunshine State. Furry is right on all counts. The whale, in no way, could ever be released into the wild. Many of Sea World’s sea life have been injured permanently and would die in the wild. The research and care Sea World takes with their animals is admirable. Sorry Lauren, but they do and many of these beautiful creatures would have died if it weren’t for their care. Here, in our part of Florida, there are many marine sanctuaries filled with manatees and turtles and other sea life whose lives have been saved and sustained through research and long-term care. The amount of good outweighs the bad for many of these animals. And everyone who devotes their lives to these splendid creatures knows the risks. They are wild animals.
In our local zoo, a zoo that specializes in raising and caring for animals on the brink of extinction, a few years back, an African elephant killed its trainer. Before the trainer died, her last words were, “Don’t blame the elephant.”
It is a fact of life. Wild animals will always have a wild instinct. But, that wild instinct won’t help them survive when, for whatever reason, they are physically unable to live in the wilds. That is where sanctuaries and zoos and preserves and their passionate people step in.

Oh, and the majority of the animals you see at the zoo were born and raised there for multiple generations. They only bring in a wild one now when it has become a problem to humans, they need fresh genetic code or when it is in danger of extinction. You all seem to be referring to capture practices that happened forty or fifty years ago. When you get a new animal at your zoo, it’s from another zoo. They trade them to keep things healthy.
The tricks they perform with the whales at Sea World alleviate boredom and anxiety. Tillicum should be taken off the show, but remain with his pod and no one should enter the water with him again, which is what Sea World is suggesting.

Without the breeding programs zoos provide, many of the species would be extinct. ie: Breeding pools are intermixed to strengthen the genetic lines so that they can be reintroduced in the wild. Great strides are being made in repopulating areas that have lost certain species. And the education they provide children and adults is invaluable. Television is a good source of discovery, but until you see something live it is living by suggestion. Zoos give us a lot more than “pure entertainment”.
Tillicum CANNOT be released for several reasons. He does not have a pod. Ripping him from his social group would be devastating. Killer whales hunt in groups. No group, he would starve. Just like Willy of Free Willy fame. He died approximately one year after release. THE most horrible death. Isolation, starvation and finally, mercifully caught pneumonia and passed.
Want to stop the unnecessary pain of animals used for the soul benefit of the pleasure of humans? Don’t eat meat or use any animals products. Go Vegan.

It surprises me that the whale was still being used in shows like this since it had killed before. I don’t blame the whale for acting on instinct, and I don’t think it should be set free or killed (same difference, given how it was raised), but it seems crazy to have trainers continue to work it.

But what is a sufficient amount of roaming room when you are used to running miles every day? And also Hulk? The amount that you are annoying is exceeded only by the amount that you are charming most other times. Holy mother of pearl. Okay, leaving again. In fact, am leaving house. On Saturday I worked in the library and I got more done in two hours than I normally get done in six. Imagine how much I would have gotten done had I been able to capture a few whales. That made no sense. I just wanted to be Hulk.

I think a zoo is fine, as long as the animals are giving a sufficient amount of roaming room.
I watched a news program that said that the whale could not be released into the wild now because people nearby would fear for their safety.

Plus, it is amazing what has become of our zoo in the past 50 years. And yes, those babies live a lot longer in our zoo than they do in the wild.

lauren, let’s don’t go so far as to eliminate all zoos because the Sea World people are playing a dangerous game. That might be a tad harsh. Where is an inner city kid to see an oryx?
Go picket Sea World; that makes sense.

I agree with all of the above. Wild animals don’t belong in a cage, a tank, or on a leash. The trainer knew what she was getting herself into…not that I don’t feel terrible for her. I’ll bet we won’t be seeing too many ponytails at the Shamu pool anymore.
When I was doing my veterinary thang, an idiot made an appointment for his cat to have a rabies shot. His cat was a mountain lion. We didn’t find that out until he walked into our waiting room with it on a leash.

hulk. never heard of tv? movies? yeah, amazing how you can see and study animals right up close on YOUR TV!
and yeah, while i’m at it – no more rodeos or circuses for me either.

The government can’t even get a handle with what’s on their plates right now. What could they possibly do in a whale investigation?? I’m with D-lou on that one.
I can see both sides as far as whales in captivity. However, this particular whale has now asked three times to be set free. I think he should be re-introduced into the wild. He seems very unhappy where he is.

It is pathetic that they capture these huge sea animals to entertain for profit. The poor whale had hundreds of thousands of miles of water to live in and was confined to a fishbowl, wouldn’t you be angry? I personally think the whale mistook the ponytail for a fish, as she had just thrown him a big fish. The trainers know the danger when they sign up, so don’t blame the whale.

Agree with all above…the whale was a wild creature. It was behaving according to character. What honked me off is hearing all the politicians asking whether there should be a government inquiry into the tragedy. In what way do they actually think they could help!#%#%#%@ Who in the SAMHELL do they think they are!?#(@*#*

Hulk, I have the phone in my hand, IN MY HAND. I was gonna call you and say, Say something asshole-y to rev up this argument. But look. You did it all on your own.

What about all the kids who would never get the opportunity to see these animals up close? And then get inspired to make the study of these animals their career choice? Don’t forget that many of these so-called “caged” anmals live better lives than any of their “free” brethren. Safe from predators, checked for desease and sickness, never a chance they won’t be fed, etc. You wanna do away with your circuses and your rodeos, well I guess I don’t have paw to stand on. But zoos and aquariums? C’mon, tree-huggers. Think it through a little…

I think the whale was being a whale. Same thing when you hear about tigers and bears in zoos attacking people stupid enough to climb into their enclosures. What do they expect to happen? Ummm, hello? They’re predators. Let’s not blame the animals for being what they are.
On a side note, love Lu’s facial expression!

It wasn’t the first time the whale attacked, right? It’s truly terrible, of course, but I can’t help but think HELLO Sea World employees, didn’t somebody maybe see this coming?
I agree with Pal.

i was going to blog about that. i still may. but i feel we have come so far in our ability to appreciate animals that we no longer need to put them in captivity.
there are people who do a fantastic job at filming and studying animals in their habitats – we can actually go and see them in their habitats –
why why oh why must we continue to cage them?
i will no longer go to zoos or places like sea world.
i’m assuming there are children who saw this – what nightmares. the loss the family is experiencing although i assume she knew her risk.
but sea world’s bottom line? the dollar.

I say let’s stop putting large, intelligent, dangerous mammals on display for the pleasure of people. Whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, and walruses belong in the ocean. End of story.
I feel similarly about gorillas and chimpanzees. Not that they belong in the ocean, they belong in the jungle. But remember that pet chimp that ate that lady’s face off a while back? THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE PETS! Oy.
Touchy subject for Pal over here. Sorry.
