  1. I loved reading about all of your costumes!

My favorite costume was a witch. I just found a black skirt and top and a shawl–I made my hat out of poster board and a plastic bowler hat (for the rim). I used my mom’s green eye shadow to tint my face green, and I was good to go. My worst Halloween was when I got sick at school (BEFORE the PARTY!) and was sent home. My mom let me go out trick or treating to my immediate neighbor’s houses but I had to wear my winter jacket under my costume–which had to then be changed to fit all those extra layers. I went as a farmer–overalls and a flannel shirt with a straw hat.
Favorite candy–Chocolate–snickers, milky way, three musketeers, m&ms, etc.
Unedible candy–those peanut butter blob things wrapped in orange and black wrappers, circus peanuts, black licorice, etc.

  2. I feel like I have the perfect adult (grown up, not naughty) costume. I have dark curly hair so I bought a simple red dress and go as Dana from Ghostbusters when she’s been taken over by Zuul. Nobody gets it unless I do the line (there is no Dana, there is only Zuul) but I love it.

  3. We always had thrown together costumes. My mom worked a lot and we didn’t have extra money for costumes. My husband and I want to come up with costumes for next year.

I loved bubble gum, so that was my favorite Halloween candy when I was a kid. My older sister loved chocolate. I used to trade my chocolates for her bubble gum. She clearly hit the sister jackpot on that regard. Sweet tarts were another favorite. Now I want the chocolate. My kids each gave me a piece of chocolate after trick or treating last night.

  4. My mother always told people proudly that I wanted to go as a cat for 4 years in a row… so she never had to fuss over finding costumes! That’s why I belong here.

  5. I can’t think of a favorite costume which is annoying because I loved and still love Halloween—it’s the only holiday I like. But every year I would imagine some elaborate version of a costume and my mom would make a competent but simple version of whatever it was. She’d plan for cold weather and make the costume so it could be worn over a coat. And then I’d be the fattest princess or witch or Indian princess in town because I was a giant child and giant child plus costume over a coat equals quite a look.

I’m pretty flexible about candy but the worst was any cheap hard candy. The suckers with the loop of string for a handle had no real flavor; the fake Life-savers that supported some cause or another were blah; the “granny” hard candies were the worst of the worst—butterscotch, “strawberries”, or anise. What were the granny-candy people thinking? That we’d be popping those hard candy bad boys into our oversized purses so we could pull them out at the picture show because we were too cheap to buy popcorn?

  6. Hmm. I guess my fav costume was one I wore in my very early 40’s! I went to a party with a guy that was ok but not a love interest. I went as a mermaid – I made a beautiful and cool looking tail – teal with sequins but very classy. Not sure what the rest looked like but when we went on a scavenger hunt, this really cute guy got behind me and flirted his butt off. Well, he was there with a date too. So we just flirty flirted all night – enough to piss off our dates but we went home with them. The next day he called me and after that we dated for several months. The costume was fun and I felt good in it… I suppose it is a little confusing as to whether it was the guy or the costume that made that so memorable! sigh.

  7. My favorite costume as a kid was as Nellie from Little House on the Prairie (though I looked more like Little Bo Peep). I made my own fancy pantaloons and ran a wire through the hem of a cast off adult sized 50s party frock. The wire made the dress skirt flare out like a miniature hooped skirt. I swung the skirt around as to show off my fancy undies. I also made a homemade bonnet.

Most hated candy was Indian Corn and the blsck/orange wrapped chewy candies. Most favote candy was sweet tarts and any type of miniture candy bar…except forButterfingers.

  8. My mom used to make our costumes and my brother and I were usually a matched set- Miss Muffet and the spider, Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf in Grandma’s clothes, Bo Peep and her sheep, etc. I think my favorite costume is in the future, because I bought a Freya tiara and next year am going as a valkyrie.

I liked getting Tootsie and Blow pops, because I would pull the wrapper down like a cape and act out dramas with the suckers. And then I ate them.

  9. I can’t remember which candy I liked the best, but I know I hated those Necco wafers.

My costumes were those cheap ones that came in a box from Woolworths with the masks you couldn’t see out of.

  10. I don’t remember too many store bought costumes. Usually we dressed as hobos. As an adult, my husband dressed as a hooker and I was a police officer. That was fun. We didn’t have candy around the house so any and all Halloween candy was loved.

  11. I am named after my mean ass paternal grandmother Barbara, so I was Barbie to my family & friends from age 0-18 (when I figured out that going by Barbie in college or at work was just an excuse for every asshat to ask where the pink car was & if I was dating Ken). I remember getting the Barbie cheap pink plastic table cloth material with the suffocating elastic strap mask costume from KMart when I was 5 and wearing it to kindergarten class parade – it was the popular costume circa 1980 and I was over the moon that so many other kids dressed up as ME, Barbie! Though I was/am short, brunette and olive skinned (the only thing that matches is the boobs), I was Barbie! And so were they! I wore that thing forever (there’s a picture at Easter with me wearing it at the dinner table?), so obsessed with that mask, no idea why. Teen years it was always hobos, babies (jammies and pigtails) or witches, or borrowing our football player boyfriend’s uniforms, we never really had money for costumes so it was whatever you pulled out of the closets.
Favorite candy then – Necco Wafers and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
Favorite candy now – Heath Bars & 100 Grand

Least favorite candy then & now: candy corn
Favorite candy then & now: Smarties

    Fun post June!

  13. It seems like I was always a gypsy, wearing my mother’s dress and lots of her necklaces. It’s possible I also was a hobo using similar props from home. I wish I would have been a princess or ballerina or something, but I don’t think that ever occurred to me back then. I wish I could remember the Purple People eater event, but I do not. I loved all the chocolate candy and still do. The bad part about the whole Halloween thing is that we three younger kids would do all the work and our older brother would then take a lot of it from us. Not cool. Why don’t you show us your robot costume, June? That was my favorite for you.

  14. I was a princess when I was about 7 or 8 – I wore my mom’s knee length wedding dress which made a perfect ballgown for me. Oh man I felt beautiful! She was very practical about it – why let it hang in the closet for years when I could play with it?
I hated getting those orange and black wrapped soft candy – they got sorted out of my bag and tossed because no one in my family would eat them. I loved getting a fun sized Snickers because that made a perfect cake for my Barbies.

  15. I didn’t have a favorite costume as a kid. There were 5 of us and we usually just wore my brother or sister’s handmedown costumes from years past. My favorite as an adult was when I had leggings that I stuffed to make huge butt cheeks and planted a toy dog in the crack. I carried around signs that had a picture of lost doggie. Not original but funny. If I could be anything it would be a really fancy medieval lady or something like that, Fav candy now Take Five bars…the perfect chocolate/carmel/peanut/pretzel treat! I ate every candy as a kid, but probably least favorite was circus peanuts.

Favorite candy as a child…100 Grand Bars, Bub’s Daddy gum, and Jolly Rancher Cherry Stix.
    Now? Bite size snickers.

  18. When I was in college, it was the ’70s and I realized that I kinda looked like Patty Hearst. So I found a sweater like the one she had in pictures, maybe handcuffs, can’t remember. But I do remember getting double takes. I actually kind of like Smarties, probably because we can only get them once a year. Least favorite are mounds or almond joys, which is why I’m giving them out this year.

  19. I was a Victorian lady one year with bits and bobs and odds and ends from my grandmother’s closet. She was more of a flapper, but I think some of it was left over from my great grandmother or my grandfather’s antique store. I had a bustle and gloves and biiiigggg flowered hat and drapey lace cuffs. I had a velvet purse instead of a candy bucket … one of those with the chain and the metal clasp at the top. I loved that costume.

  20. My fav Halloween costumes all = Gee you must be introverted, huh? Like the awesome costume for grown-ups where you turn off all the lights at the front of the house and watch a subtitled movie very very quietly

Or the (childhood) Bestest Halloween where my mom made my costume, did not force me to wear the store bought ICan’tBreathe mask, trick-or-treating with my 2 bffs and then we had a slumber party in the *fancy* formal LR usually reserved for Dinner Parties and Christmas. No idea what I wore but my bffs were a ghost and a hobo.

Fav candies as kid: Heath bars, Heath bars, Heath bars *my mom told me these were only sold at Halloween btw!

  21. In the mid 50s our costumes were all home made, and my favorite was the gypsy outfit. The best candy was anything chocolate. Bubble gum was also good. Hated all candies that contained peanut butter, licorice, or molasses.

We loved that the lady on the next street gave out full size Hershey bars. She was an older wonan with no children, and I didn’t even know her name, but more than 60 years later I still remember her generosity.

  22. Favorite child costume was as a flower girl. I had a genuine gown, slip and veil because I was chosen to attend the miniature bride who crowned the outside statue of the BVM. My mother was a suck up with the nun as were the other four girl’s moms. As an adult I rented a flapper costume to be the Matron of Honor in my friend’s Halloween themed wedding. It was the only one that fit my fat ass but I loved it and would have chosen it anyway. My fantasy costume is Vampire Bride, like Lucy in Dracula, with a real second hand gown, because I got married in a dress and not a bridal gown.

I like most candy but I despised Baby Ruth’s. There were always rumors that they had rat hair and razor blades in them. I did not care for the texture, nuts in candy are not my thing except for an occasional Snickers. Reese’s cups, 100 Grands, Nestle Bars were favorites then. Rolos too. Today anything fruit and chocolate is my thing or Lindt truffles. And black licorice allsorts.

One year I had a little witch pointed, broad brimmed hat. I was too cool for the catwalk. One year I had a clown costume ala Bozo and felt so self conscious you couldn’t have dragged me down the catwalk on a leash. Other than that it was gypsy alternated with hobo and back to gypsy . You know, from the closet. My last year was 7th grade and I dressed as a Beatnik. Black tights, black flats, black short skirt, black top, AND black beret. I thought I was to die for.

Favorite candy now: Dove Dark Chocolates

    • Yes, the I can’t breathe mask . And back in the real olden days, the half masks that smelled so toxic I’m surprised we didn’t die. And the color of the mask rubbed off on your face and it itched like the dickens. Probably made from the sweepings of the poison factory somewhere.

  25. So many fun costumes from years ago, but one of my favorites was dressing up as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with my high school friends our senior year. I was a Grumpy. We had so much fun. I despise candy corn and any sweet-sour candy. Always loved Turkish Taffy and Tootsie Rolls.

  26. I don’t have a favorite costume from childhood. As an adult it’s a toss-up between cigarette girl, bearded lady and a truck stop waitress named Earline.

My favorite candy, Resse’s Cup and Kit Kat.

I already dressed up twice this season but if I could have chosen anything it would have been any costume with a giant, full, long skirt because those skirts make me happy.

  27. Pirates and Cavemen are always my favorites. They are timeless and have fun props to go with them. To me, the props are just as important as the costume itself. Best Halloween candy ever – the black and orange peanut butter chews but I have to be careful eating them these days because of all the dental work! Right now my son and I are binging on candy corn in a bowl mixed with dry roasted peanuts. Worst candy – anything licorice.

  29. I’ve honestly never had a good Halloween costume. As kids we mostly did the “dress up from what you can find in that closet” thing. I was amazed when I found out people bought costumes! Closest I came to a good costume was when I dressed up as my fisherman boyfriend when he couldn’t go to a party. Part of the time I was just me in a flannel shirt and jeans but if somebody asked about Dave I stuffed my hair under a hat and grabbed the fishing stuff. This was the party where a friend thought she was going to set me up with somebody who was not my boyfriend but I didn’t know that and I came dressed as… a guy.

  32. As a kid I liked a clown costume we had because it did not have an awful plastic mask with a slit in it to make it hard to breathe.

Favorite costume because it was ripped from the headlines 22 years ago: I wore jeans and an NBC sweatshirt (I was a nanny for an NBC anchor). On my butt I pinned a Happy Meal toy of chattering teeth that activated when you pulled a string. I wore a sign that said ‘I dated Marv Albert and all I got was this lousy sweatshirt and a pain in my ass.’ He had just gotten in trouble for biting his girlfriend on the ass or something along those lines! Big hit and very comfy.

Coach is 6’4″ and a few years back I made him Gumby and made myself into his pony pal Pokey. Just wore it to a party last weekend. Pics are on my blog. Coach looks hilarious.

Loved the houses that gave out full size 3 musketeers, milkyway , and snickers bars. Today love reeces peanut butter cups. Hate butterfingers and black licorice.

  33. My favorite costume was the year I dressed as an angel and my brother was the devil. I was six years old and he was four. I remember one neighbor loved it so much she invited us in to show her husband and visiting friends. That was when we wore those hot sweaty molded plastic masks with the faces of whatever character we were going to be and had the costumes to match.

Favorite candy as a kid was all of it because we loved Halloween and the candy haul we would get. We’d come home and dump it all on the floor and divide it into the types of candy. Can’t remember what kind I’d trade with my brother.

If I purchase candy today, it is M&M’s with peanuts.

My favorite candy is anything. I love candy of all kinds. I had an older brother and sister who would sort all the candy after trick or treating. They would keep all the good candy and give me the green life savers and the circus peanuts. I got the black jelly beans and the white ones. I learned there is no bad candy.

I lived in NYC so could trick or treat in just my building and collect quite a haul without having to wear a coat over my costume or ever going outside and getting cold or wet. My most memorable costume from those years was when I dressed as Pebbles Flintstone. And not a slutty one. My mom made the leopard print dress and we fixed a bone in my standy-up hair.

My favorite costume in my twenties (I think? the Party Years) was my father’s navy uniform. Again, not a slutty one. Although it was the time of big hair and a lot of makeup, so not exactly Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh, either.

MFC: Mounds, Hershey with Almonds, Hershey Special Dark Miniature.

I have a cauldron of witch costumes. Favorite was a few years ago -when walking to my car late at night, by the light of a street lamp, my shadow cast long in the dried leaves. It was so wicked. Of course I took pictures! Sorry, don’t see a way to post one here. Tonight, I’ll be Nessa Rose AKA the wicked witch from the East who had the house fall on her. Black dress, horizontally stripped stockings, my trusty broom, hat and guilty pleasure….ruby slippers studded with ruby red Swavorski crystals.

  42. Not my favorite but my most memorable – one year I dressed up as a used car salesman complete with loud, mismatched slacks and sports jacket (from Goodwill) and slicked back hair. I changed jobs after that and worked at a place where a gentleman named Bob actually dressed like that naturally, and the next year I wore the same costume. Everyone assumed I was dressed as Bob no matter how much I insisted i wasn’t and to this day I (over 25 years later) i am ashamed of my meanness because I sorta was.
I don’t really have a favorite candy. I love sugar in all its forms but mostly prefer it in non-chovolate forms. I don’t like the orange peanuts, but even those will get eaten eventually.

Worst candy – Boston Baked Beans. Blech. Who decided that was a good idea. Followed by those weird pinwheels that were sort of carmel-y but not really filled with that white, grainy stuff. Ewww.
